2002 Kia Sportage by TheHunteroftheUndead 2002 Kia Sportage by TheHunteroftheUndead
The Kia Sportage is a compact crossover SUV that was introduced in 1993. It was developed during a time when Kia was allied with Ford and Mazda, thus it shared many parts with Mazda vehicles. The platform itself is based on the Mazda Bongo. It was sold as a 2-door model with a sofftop rear section or a 4-door model. US sales of the Sportage began around 1998. Power came from the 2.0L FE I4 (SOHC or DOHC), or the 2.0L RF diesel I4. Transmission offerings are a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual. Rear wheel drive was standard, with 4 wheel drive offered as an option. Seen at a Harkin's in Prescott Valley, AZ.

The first-generation Kia Sportage is a shining example of the shoddy build quality of 1990s Korean cars. The first-gen Sportage was actually recalled TWICE because the rear wheels could actually come off while driving! I mean for Celestia's sake, they say "they don't build 'em like that anymore". Sometimes that's a good thing.

The 2002 model year Sportage was luckily only recalled 3 times.  Two were because the front turn signals were not amber color to comply with American road laws Supercooper17 , and the second was because the heat from the engine could melt and deform the radiator fan, causing it to warp and come in contact with the radiator housing and completely shatter sending bits of fan blades all over the engine, and if you happened to have the hood up when it happened, could pose a personal injury hazard.

Loved it when these Kias were sort of like a Jeep competitor!

Too bad they were plagued with shoddy build quality in their earliest days.......

I think that was part of their charm....

Maybe if you call flimsy interior plastics and wheels detatching while driving "charming". ;)
